Never wrote anything on Mumbai city before. But one more time Vedika's class assignment made me write. And not a poem this time.
I would have written a more dark and depressing piece if it wasn't for her age group. I am happy to present this one. It's younger, purer and more optimistic.
MY MUMBAI - MY HOME
Hi. I am Vedika. A young Mumbaikar. And a proud one.
What is it about Mumbai that makes me proud? Well, for one, it is home. And home is where the heart is.
But that's not all. My favourite part of my city is that we have beaches!!!! It is like a round - the - year fun fair where there is no entry fee. My mother tells me that in fact they are cleaner now than they were few years ago. I love building of sand castles, swimming in the sea, the occasional bhel puri or pav bhaji and the icy gola. All while watching the sun go from bright golden yellow to red and orange before it sets.
But its not just the beaches that are great. My father once took me by local train to CST station. I was amazed to see so many people travelling to work, colleges, markets. How would these people travel so fast, if there were no local trains? No wonder the local trains are known as the lifeline of Mumbai. And now the metro has just added a new lifeline. The bright red BEST buses, auto rickshaws, taxis, cars and bikes All create a buzz of traffic and activity which sometimes cause traffic jams that my father just hates.
Even though Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra, it is really like a mini India. People who speak different languages, follow different religions, and work in different industries, all live here in harmony.
The Bollywood stars, modern glitzy malls, huge brightly lit hoardings, highways are all jewels in the Crown of Mumbai. So are prestigious colleges, universities and art galleries. Mumbai sees glamour, intellect, art, industry in equal measure.
Sometimes the children begging on streets, people living in slums, crime and accidents make me sad and worried. But Mumbai embraces all. It is a city of eternal hope and truly a city of dreams..... dreams that do come true.
